Ashdod

The first systematic excavations at Tel Ashdod took place over nine seasons between 1962 and 1972, under the direction of Moshe Dothan. These excavations uncovered a monumental Iron Age six-chambered gate and important artifacts of Philistine culture, including the famous Ashdoda figurine and Ashdod ware pottery. After decades of inactivity, excavations resumed in 2025 through a partnership led by Ariel University, together with international institutions. The renewed project focuses on re-examining the monumental gate using modern techniques, including 3D digital modeling. Researchers have also uncovered an earlier four-chambered gate beneath the later structure, along with metalworking remains and ancient mudbrick surfaces. In cooperation with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, the project also aims to conserve the site and prepare Tel Ashdod to become an official Israeli national park.
