Malachi 4:5

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord [Joel 2:31; Acts 2:17–21; 1 Thess 5:2].
[Since Elijah was taken up into heaven without dying (2 Kings 2:11), his return has always been associated with the advent of the Messianic age in the Jewish faith, see John 1:19–28. John the Baptist had the spirit of Elijah (Matt. 11:14; 17:1–13; Mark 9:2–13; Luke 9:28–36) and fulfilled the prophecy in Malachi 3:1, but he was not Elijah (John 1:21). See also Revelation 11:1–13.]
