From the tribe of Gad, Goel, son of Machi.
[Verses 5 and 17 both begin with the words "this" and "name" in Hebrew and serve as a frame for the list. Of these twelve names, only Caleb (verse 7) and Joshua (here called Hosea, see verse 9) are mentioned as giving a good report in other places in the Bible. The name Caleb comes from the Hebr. kelev, the word for dog, which in turn means "close to the heart." Probably in the sense that Caleb was faithful. Joshua is mentioned by the name given to him by Moses, see verse 17. The order of the list follows that in Num. 1:5–15 with the difference that Zebulun is separated from the other sons of Leah in verse 10 and "the tribe of Joseph" stands for Joseph's children Ephraim and Manasseh in verse 11.]
