First letter to the Corinthians 14:26

[This is the second major section dealing with the order of worship. In the first section, 1 Cor. 11:17–34, Paul addressed problems surrounding the celebration of the Lord's Supper, where some were hungry and others were drunk. In this section, he addresses what was said in worship, which seemed to be chaotic. Sermons and prayers must be conducted in an orderly manner.]
How should it be, then, brothers and sisters in faith?
Well, when you gather together, each one has something to contribute:
a psalm,
a teaching [by teachers],
a [prophetic] revelation,
a tongue and an interpretation.
Let everything be for edification.
[These five elements indicate participation in worship. However, it seems that the gatherings have become unnecessarily long and counterproductive. Both men and women prayed and prophesied, see the previous paragraph 1 Cor. 11:4–5. Now both men and women are urged not to speak at the same time, to wait their turn, and sometimes to be silent.]
