Tuesday is a good-good day!

Why is the Israeli and US election held on a Tuesday? The answer comes from Genesis, chapter 1. In the creation story, it is only on the third day that God says it is good—twice.

When reading about the third day, in verse 9-10 God separated land from the water and said – it was good. Then comes a structural element (a chiastic pattern) in verse 11, followed by God once more in verse 12 saying – it was good.

In the biblical calendar, the week follows the exact order of creation in the Book of Genesis. Because God rested on the seventh day—the Sabbath, which is Saturday—the week automatically resets right after. This means Sunday is always the first day of the week. In fact, the Hebrew word for Sunday is Yom Rishon, which literally translates to "First Day."

If you count forward from Sunday, the math is simple:

  • Day 1: Sunday
  • Day 2: Monday
  • Day 3: Tuesday

That is precisely why Tuesday (the third day) is considered an especially good day to start something new in Israel. You will often see weddings on Tuesdays if you visit Jerusalem. Jesus attended a wedding in Cana on the very “third day” (see John 2:1). The third day is also a good day to write a contract or start something new. And it is a good day to vote on!

There are also other practical explanations, but this is the Biblical reason why the election day is on Tuesdays in USA.
