Esther 1:2

At that time King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) sat on his royal throne in the palace at Susa (Shoshan).
[Ahasuerus’ father, Darius the Great, was the one who made Susa the capital of the Persian Empire in 521 BC. He transported over a million cubic meters of fill material and built a 15-meter-high plateau, covering about 100 hectares (1 km²), where he constructed an enormous palace and a large banquet hall. Ahasuerus’ son, Artashastas (who reigned from 465-424 BC) also based himself in Susa. It was here that his bodyguard (cupbearer) Nehemiah came before him to ask permission to return and rebuild Jerusalem. The contrast between the extravagant palace in Susa and a devastated Jerusalem must have weighed heavily on Nehemiah’s heart.]
