Psalms 82:1

God (Elohim) [judge of the universe] stands in the assembly of gods [the heavenly court],
amidst the gods (elohim) he holds judgment.
[In the compound word "assembly of gods," literally "in God's assembly," the most general word for god, Hebr. El, is used. It can describe God, see Ps. 19:2, idols, or powerful people, often judges. The meaning here seems to be a heavenly court before a gathered divine committee, see Job 1:6; 2:1; 1 Kings 22:19–23, a scene that is also described in Ugaritic texts such as the Legend of Keret. Paul also describes a spiritual hierarchy, see Eph. 6:12; Col. 1:16. See also verse 6 and Ps. 89:6–8. Anything that takes God's place is an idol, see Ex. 20:3. The Hebrew preposition qerev, translated as "among," requires that the second elohim be translated in the plural: "among the gods."]
