[Jesus probably now saw between the trees the torchlight of the large crowd approaching.]
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd [Roman soldiers, see John 18:3, and temple guards, see Luke 22:52] with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people [these three groups were part of the Sanhedrin – the highest court of the Jews].
