Luke 9:24

For whoever wants to save (would like to preserve) his life,
will lose (destroy; totally ruin) it,
but whoever loses (would now lose) his life for my sake,
he will save (he is the one who will preserve) it.
[Gk. psuche, which includes both life and soul, is used in both senses here in verse 24, see also John 12:25. Denying oneself (verse 23) is not about lacking self-esteem or self-respect – Jesus' followers have reason to have a better self-image than anyone else. God's fatherly love is enormous and is not based on deeds but on childhood, see Gal. 3:26. Jesus had previously preached about the heavenly reward and what it means to gain life, see Luke 6:20–26. The question in the next verse makes it clear that self-denial is about putting God and his kingdom first.]
