If they do not receive you, leave that town and shake the dust off your feet. It will be a testimony against them."
[According to Jewish custom, one shook the dust off one's feet after passing through a pagan area to show that one wanted nothing to do with them. Here, the symbolism is that the Jewish city that did not want to know the disciples is no better than a pagan city. This exhortation from Jesus is also practiced later, see Acts 13:51; 18:6.]
