Acts 22:24

[Lysias did not understand Hebrew or Aramaic, so he decided to use the standard Roman method for extracting the truth—interrogation under torture. The whip (a Roman flagrum) consisted of leather straps embedded with metal balls or sharp bone fragments designed to tear the skin. It was not uncommon for the victim to die. This was a much worse punishment than the flogging Paul and Silas received in Philippi, see Acts 16:22.]
The commander [Lysias] then ordered that Paul be taken into the fortress and interrogated under flogging, so that they might find out why they were shouting at him like that.
