Hebrews 2:1

[Now follows the first of five warnings in this letter. For the others, see Heb. 3–4; 5:11–6:20; 10:19–39; 12. The recipients of the letter were slow to hear and immature, see Heb. 5:11–12. There was a risk that they would fall away from the faith. The word "drive away" is an unusual word and is only used here in the New Testament. The author may have had Prov 3:21 in mind. In the Greek translation of that verse, this word is used in the exhortation to preserve sound judgment and good sense. The author includes himself in the warning; the word "we" appears a total of five times in verses 1 and 3. In Heb. 6:19 is the answer to how not to drift away; faith and hope in Jesus are likened there to an anchor.]
Therefore [because Jesus, who mediates the renewed covenant, is high above all angels, see Heb. 1:5–14], we must pay much more attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away [with the prevailing opinion of those around us].
