Dear children [beloved young family members in the faith], let us not (we should not) [only] love with words or speech (literally: nor with the tongue), but [also] in deed and truth.
[The Greek word logos (word) also includes thought, motive, and reasoning and, like the other three nouns that follow, is in the singular. Balance is important – not just loving in theory, but also acting practically and working tirelessly in accordance with the truth. In the next chapter, the author warns against false prophets and reminds us of the necessity of testing which spirit is at work. A believer is expected to be welcoming and generous, but not to say yes to every request for support and loyalty. In the next letter, John warns against deceivers whom believers are urged not to receive, see 2 John 1:10–11.]
