Judges 18:1

[The following phrase recurs four times in the conclusion of the Book of Judges, see Judg. 17:6; 19:1; 21:25.]
In those days there was no king in Israel.
And in those days the Danites [still] sought an inheritance [their own territory] to dwell in, for nothing had been given them to this day as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
[Moses had previously blessed Dan and assigned their tribe the area of Bashan, located in the Golan north of the tribe of Naphtali, see Deut. 33:22. Under Joshua's leadership, the tribe of Dan had been given the area west of Jerusalem towards the Mediterranean Sea between Ephraim and Benjamin, see Josh. 19:40–48. However, the Danites do not seem satisfied with their allocation (the area is too "cramped," see Josh. 19:47) and want the northern area Moses mentions in his blessing, rather than the lot they received from Josh. This chapter describes how the Danites conquered the northern city of Laish, which was then named Dan.]
