Ruth 1:1

In the days when the judges [spiritual and military leaders of the Jewish people, see Judg. 2:16] ruled, there was a famine in the land.
[The time of the judges is an approximately 300–year period in Jewish history, after the wilderness wanderings and before the monarchy. It is a dark time in Israel’s history. There is anarchy, with internal conflicts among the twelve tribes but also with neighboring countries.]
Then a man went from Bethlehem of Judah with his wife and two sons to live for a time in the land of Moab.
