She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son, whom she named Onan [pronounced "Ohnan" and meaning "strong"].
Then Judah said to Onan (Hebr.): "Go in to your brother's wife and perform your duty as her husband's brother and provide your brother with offspring (children; literally seed)."
But Onan (Hebr. Ónan) knew that the seed (child) would not be his, so when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled his seed on the ground, so that he would not give offspring to his brother.
The sons of Judah:

but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
