Zephaniah 3:7

I said,
"Surely now you [the city of Jerusalem personified] will fear (respect) me,
and accept my correction (rebuke)."
Then her dwelling would not be destroyed,
according to all [the judgments] I have decreed against her.
But they still rose early
and carried out all their tasks corruptly.
[Early morning, before the heat of the midday sun, is the best time for business in the Middle East. The expression "rose early" describes how they purposefully, willingly, and enthusiastically devote themselves to evil, that which is worthless and leads to destruction. The expression "they rise," not "she" or "my people" rise, implies a further distancing in language; they have left God's ways.]
