[The Pharisees had developed sophisticated systems to protect their integrity when making religious vows. Instead of promising something in the name of God, they swore an oath to the earth, Jerusalem, etc. In this way, they had not technically sworn by God's name and could therefore, they believed, break their promise without breaking God's commandment.]
