Acts 6:7

The word of God continued to spread, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly. Even a large number of priests began to obey the faith [by accepting Jesus as the Messiah]. [Faith and obedience go hand in hand, see Acts 5:32; Rom. 1:5.]
[At this time, a total of nearly 20,000 priests and Levites served in the temple. They were divided into 24 divisions. Each division performed temple duties for one week, five times a year. Three of these occasions were during the major festivals when all the priests served together. Most priests and Levites did not live in Jerusalem, see Luke 1:39–40; 10:30–32. Many of them were poor and supported themselves, and had little in common with the religious upper class represented by the Sadducees. The large number of priests who came to faith probably came from this poor group. Their number must have been in the hundreds, if not thousands, and this must have aroused the envy of the Jewish leaders.]
