Isaiah 51:9

[The phrase "Awake" here in verse 9 recurs in verse 17 and in Isa. 52:1. It emphasizes and frames the text.]
Wake up! Wake up!
Put on your strength, O arm of the Lord (Yahweh)!
Wake up as in days of old [Hebr. kedem; east – the direction where God meets man and we see both backward and forward],
generations of old.
Are you not the one who cut Rahav [poetic name for Egypt] to pieces,
who pierced the dragon (sea monster – Hebr. tanin)?
[Hebrew rahav means "pride," see Isa. 30:7.]
