Lamentations 4:17

For our part, our eyes grow dim
as they look in vain for help [to go against Babylon, see Jer. 34:21–22; 37:5–10].
From our watchtowers, we have observed
a people (nation) that cannot save us anyway.
[Instead of trusting in God, Judah put its hope in Egypt, see 2 Kings 24:7; Isa. 30:7; Jer. 37:5–11.]
[The sixteenth Hebrew letter is: ע – ayin. The character depicts an eye or a water source. It often symbolizes prophetic insight and revelation. Here, it is the words "For our part" that begin with this letter. The word "eyes" is also found in the verse, lamenting that they are not very useful.]
