Ezekiel 9:1

[This passage is about the judgment of the idolaters Ezekiel saw destroying the temple, see Ezek. 8. The previous chapter ended with the proclamation of judgment, see Ezek. 8:18, which is repeated at the end of this vision, see verse 10. But the judgment will only take place after the faithful have been marked. The passage is structured as a chiasm framed by the man in linen, see verses 1-3 and verse 11.
Later in the vision, it is suggested that these seven men can also be interpreted as angels. It is not unusual for angels to be called men, see Gen. 18:2; 32:24; Dan. 10:5. Babylonian mythology describes a group of seven beings subordinate to God, whose task is to punish and destroy. The Aramaic Sefire inscription from the 7th century (found in 1930 in Al-Safirah near Aleppo in Syria) mentions curses by "the seven" if a covenant is broken.]
Then he cried out in my ears [the voice of God] with a loud voice and said:
Bring the city's guardians (those who rule, but also discipline – Hebr. peqoda) close,
each man with his weapon of destruction (deadly weapon – Hebr. machet) in his hand.
