And they [the 10 men—Shamoa, Shafat, Jigal, Palti, Gadiel, Gaddi, Amiel, Setor, Nachbi, and Goel, see verses 5-16] spread an evil rumor (misleading information) about the land they had explored to the sons of Israel, saying: "The land we have traveled through to explore is a land that devours (eats up) its inhabitants [probably referring to the fact that there had been many conflicts in the area, and how difficult it would be to conquer and then keep the land from invaders], and all the people we saw there are tall men.
