Numbers 25:1

[Verses 1-3 form a chiasm. The structure emphasizes how it is precisely the sacrifice to these idols that is central to what arouses God's wrath. Baal is the Canaanite and Hebrew word for "lord" and Peor is the place. The place is located just east of Jericho and is also called Beit-Peor (Peor's house) in Deut. 3:29. Baal was a fertility god who was worshipped with sexual rites, see Jer. 2:23; Hos. 2:13.]
And Israel stayed in Shittim [plural of Shittah, Hebrew for acacia tree – according to Josephus, 1 mile east of the Jordan, see Num. 33:49; Josh. 2:1; 3:1]
and the people began to commit adultery with the daughters of Moab.
