Numbers 25:9

Those who died from the plague were 24,000.
[Paul refers to this event in 1 Cor. 10:8. There, the number is 23,000 because Paul refers to the oral tradition that 23,000 died from the plague and 1,000 were killed in other ways (by the judges, see Num. 25:5). Numbers are written with letters in Hebrew. The normal way to write 24,000 is esrim v-arba elef (20 and 4 – 1,000). Here, the number is written from smallest to largest value: arba v-esrim elef (4 and 20 – 1,000), cf. 1 Chron. 23:4; 27:1–15.]
