Matthew 8:2

Suddenly, a leper (the word describes a number of different skin diseases) came up and fell down (on his knees with his head to the ground) in worship before him and said, "Lord, if you want (desire, long for), you can cleanse me."
[Those who had this type of disease were excluded from society and lived in colonies outside the cities. The Jews avoided contact because it made them unclean, see Lev. 5:3. The Greek word lepra is a general term for various types of skin diseases that spread. Most Bible scholars believe that it is not the leprosy that exists today, also known as Hansen's disease. The reason it is often translated as leprosy is that both diseases affect the skin. Since the disease was incurable and contagious, it was also considered a symbol of sin, see, for example, Num. 12:10.]
