John then said to the crowds [Sadducees and Pharisees, see Matt. 3:7] who were coming in a steady stream [from villages and towns] to be baptized by him, "You poisonous serpents, who has secretly persuaded you that you can escape the coming judgment [God's wrath against sin]?
