John 9:13

[In Jesus' time, there were three major religious groups – the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenes. The first two are often mentioned in the other Gospels, while John only mentions the Pharisees in his Gospel. This is noteworthy because the Sadducees were in the majority in the highest Jewish authority, the Sanhedrin. The difference between these groups was that the Sadducees only accepted the Books of Moses as their authority, while the Pharisees accepted the entire Scriptures, see Acts 23:8. The reason the Essenes are not mentioned at all in the New Testament is that they were a closed group who lived apart from society, often in seclusion and isolation. One of these places was Qumran, where the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 has shed more light on how this group lived. When the temple was destroyed in 70 CE, the Sadducees disbanded because the sacrificial service in Jerusalem was no longer functioning. The Pharisees, who were more open to the tradition of interpretation, were able to adapt their teachings to the new circumstances and continue to exist. When John wrote his gospel at the end of the first century, he chose to mention only the Pharisees, who were well known at the time.]
