The governor [said nothing himself, but] signaled to Paul to speak, and he replied:
"Since I know that you have been a judge of this people for many years, I confidently defend my case.
[Like Tertullus, Paul opens his speech with a captatio benevolentiae, but it is more truthful and without exaggeration.]
