First letter to the Corinthians 12:8


To one is given through the Spirit [the power to speak] words of wisdom [a guiding word in a special situation].
To another is given [the power to give] words of knowledge [insight into something that God supernaturally reveals] through the same Spirit.
[The difference between wisdom and knowledge is that wisdom is about how knowledge should be applied in a particular situation. Words of wisdom often deal with how conflicts should be resolved and unity created, as emphasized in the preceding verses, see verses 4-6. An example of words of wisdom is when Solomon discovered who the child's real mother was in a custody dispute, see 1 Kings 3:16–28. Several examples can be found in the Acts of the Apostles, where words of wisdom help to structure the distribution of food and later how James' words resolve a major conflict, see Acts 6:2–4; 15:19–22.
An example of words of knowledge is when Jesus asks Peter to go down to the lake where he knows a fish will have a silver coin in its mouth that they will use for the temple tax, see Matt. 17:24–27. Other examples are when Jesus speaks to Nathanael and to the woman at the well, see John 1:47–48; 4:16.]
