First letter to the Corinthians 6:12

[Paul now uses a rhetorical device called diatrib. An imaginary dialogue partner is quoted and then contradicted. Since Greek does not have quotation marks, one cannot be entirely sure when it is a quotation and when it is not. It is not unlikely that these quotations originally came from Paul himself when he argued against Jewish legalism. Taken out of context, some had used them to support unrestrained freedom. The same four lines are found almost verbatim in 1 Cor. 10:23.]
[You say:] "Everything is permissible for me,"
but not everything is beneficial (compared to other things).
[You say:] "Everything is permissible,"
but I will not let anything control (enslave) me.
