[The phrase "I say this" refers forward in the same way as in 1 Cor. 4:17. Unlike the case of incest and the question of whether it is compatible with Christian faith to go to prostitutes, which had a clear answer, there is no clear answer as to whether widows and widowers should remarry. In verse 7, it is clear that one of the spiritual gifts is the ability to live unmarried. The prevailing situation in the world also played a role, see 1 Cor. 7:26.]
