"Physical training is useful (helps)
to some extent (gives a small short-term benefit),
while godliness (reverent worship) is useful (helps)
in every way,
for it has the promise of life,
both in this life and in the life to come."
[Physical training is the Greek word gymnasia. It can refer to physical training in general or to asceticism, see verse 3, where one forces the body into obedience in order to achieve a higher spirituality.]
