First letter of John 2:2

He is the atoning sacrifice (the complete sacrifice) for our sins, and not only for ours but for the sins of the whole world. [There are two extremes in the view of sin that are addressed in this passage, see 1 John 1:8–2:2. For those who say they have never sinned, John is clear that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," see Rom. 3:23. At the same time, the letter is written to encourage people to avoid sinning. The righteous may fall seven times, but they will rise again, see Prov 24:16. There is forgiveness and purification for those who confess their mistakes, see 1 John 1:9.]
