Levi's sons:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The sons of Levi [Israel's third son] were, in order of age:
Gershon [his sons are listed in ],
Kehat [his sons are listed in ], and
Merari [his sons are listed in ].
Levi lived to be 137 years old.
[Jacob had twelve sons, but since this genealogy is about Moses and Aaron, it is sufficient to include the sons up to Jacob's third son, Levi.]
The sons of Kohath:
Amram [his sons are listed in ],
Jizhar [his sons are listed in ],
Hebron (Hebr. Chevrón) and
Uzziel [his sons are listed in ].
Kehat lived to be 133 years old.
And these were the sons of Levi by their names:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
And the sons of Kohath by their families:
Amram, Jizhar, Hebron (Hebr. Chevrón), and Uzziel.
To Kehat belong the family of Amram and the family of Jizhar and the family of Chevron and the family of Uzziel. These are the families of the Kehathites,
The families of the Kohathites shall camp on the south side of the tabernacle.
The leader of the fathers' houses among the Kohathites is Elizaphan, the son of Uzziel.
"Take the number of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of the Levites, by their families, by their fathers' houses,
This is the work of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, among the most holy things.
And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furniture and all the holy utensils, when the camp is [ready to] move on, then the sons of Kohath shall come and carry them, but they shall not touch the holy objects, lest they die. These objects are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. [They shall carry everything with poles or with yokes.]
"Do not cut off the family of the Kohathites from the Levites,
And Moses and Aaron and the leaders of the congregation counted the sons of the Kohathites by their families and their fathers' houses,
These are those who were counted of the families of the Kohathites, of all those who served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted according to the commandment of the Lord (Yahweh) by the hand of Moses.
But he gave nothing to the sons of Kohath, because the service of the holy things belongs to them; they carry them on their shoulders. [The Kohathites were also descendants of Levi, see .]
And the Kohathites who carried the sanctuary set out so that the tabernacle would be set up before their arrival.

And these are those who are counted among the Levites according to their families:
Of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites,

of Merari, the family of the Merarites.
These are the families of Levi:
the family of the Libnites,
the family of the Chevronites,
the family of the Machlites,
the family of the Moshites,
and the family of the Korachites.
And Kehat bore Amram.
And the lot fell to the families of the Kohathites, the sons of Aaron the priest, who were Levites, and the lot fell to the tribe of Judah, and to the tribe of Simeon, and to the tribe of Benjamin, 13 cities.
And the rest of the sons of Kohath received by lot for their families from the tribe of Ephraim and from the tribe of Dan and from the half-tribe of Manasseh—10 cities.
And they were for the sons of Aaron of the family of the Kohathites, who were the sons of Levi, for the first lot was theirs.
And the families of the sons of Kohath, the Levites, the rest of the sons of Kohath, received their cities by lot from the tribe of Ephraim.
All the cities for the rest of the sons of the Kohathites were 10 with the open land around them.

These are the dwelling places of the Levites, the tent cities they had within their territories. The lot fell first to the descendants of Aaron from the family of Kohath,
The rest of the descendants of Kohath received ten cities from one half of the tribe of Manasseh, by lot, family by family.
Some families among the descendants of Kohath received cities within their territory from the tribe of Ephraim:
and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Aner with pasture lands and Bileam with pasture lands. All this was given to the families among the rest of the descendants of Kohath.
Some of their brothers, the sons of the Kohathites, were responsible for the showbread and were to prepare it for every Sabbath.

David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The sons of Kehath were:
Amram, Jishar, Hebron, and Ussiel—four in all.
And the Levites who belonged to the Kohathites and the Korahites stood up and praised the Lord (Yahweh), the God of Israel, with a loud and powerful voice.
Then the Levites arose:
Mahath, the son of Amasai, and Joel, the son of Azariah
of the family of the Kohathites,
of the family of Merari
Kish, the son of Abdi, and Azariah, the son of Jehallelel,
of the Gershonites
Joah, the son of Zimmah, and Eden, the son of Joash,
The men performed their work with diligence. Their supervisors and foremen were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the family of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the family of the Kohathites. All these Levites were skilled musicians.
