Levi's sons:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
The sons of Levi [Israel's third son] were, in order of age:
Gershon [his sons are listed in ],
Kehat [his sons are listed in ], and
Merari [his sons are listed in ].
Levi lived to be 137 years old.
[Jacob had twelve sons, but since this genealogy is about Moses and Aaron, it is sufficient to include the sons up to Jacob's third son, Levi.]
The sons of Merari:
Mahli and Mushi.
These were the Levitical families in order of age.
And these were the sons of Levi by their names:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
And the sons of Merari by their families:
Machli and Moshi. These are the families of Levi according to their fathers' houses.
To Merari belong the families of Machli and Moshi. These are the families of the Merarites.
The leader of the house of their fathers among the Merarites is Zohar, the son of Avihail. They shall camp beside the tabernacle on the north side.
The sons of Merari [a total of 6,000 men who were stationed on the north side of the tabernacle] were assigned to be responsible for the boards of the tabernacle, its crossbars, its posts, and its bases, and all its equipment, and everything belonging to it for carrying out its service,
[The Lord continues to speak to Moses:] "As for the sons of Merari, you shall count them by their families, by their fathers' houses.
This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari in the tent of meeting, and their responsibility shall be under the authority of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest."

The men performed their work with diligence. Their supervisors and foremen were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the family of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the family of the Kohathites. All these Levites were skilled musicians.
