Therefore, the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council.
[The Great Council, the Sanhedrin, was the highest decision-making body among the Jews. It consisted of 71 members from the Pharisees and Sadducees. They held daily meetings. This is the only time the word Sanhedrin is used in an indefinite form (a council), which may indicate that this was an informal meeting. Normally, the high priest Caiaphas, see verse 49, would have been the one to convene the meeting.]
They said, "What shall we do? For this man performs many signs (proofs, miracles).
