John 13:4

[Jesus begins his teaching by illustrating what true leadership is by performing the task of a slave. Thematically, there is also a connection to how Mary had previously anointed Jesus' feet, see John 12:3.]
He [Jesus] rose from the supper table and laid aside his garments, and having taken (received) a linen towel [a towel about 1.5 m long that belonged to a servant], he tied it around [he tied it tightly around] himself (literally: he girded himself).
