John 19:29

A vessel full of sour wine stood there [a cheap vinegar wine that probably belonged to the soldiers who crucified Jesus], and they fastened a sponge soaked in the sour wine around a hyssop stalk [about 0.5 m long] and brought it to his mouth. [A bunch of hyssop was used when the blood of the Passover lamb was smeared on the doorposts, see Ex. 12:22. Earlier, Jesus had refused to accept wine mixed with gall/myrrh to ease the pain, see Matt. 27:34; Mark 15:23.]
