First letter of John 1:1

[The First Epistle of John does not have the traditional opening with sender, recipient and greeting phrase that most other letters in the New Testament have. The first four verses are one long sentence in Greek and have a complex structure that centers on Jesus being the Word that gives life and remains forever.]
That which existed from the beginning [Gen. 1:1; John 1:1] ...
That which we have heard (and which still sounds in our ears) ...
That which we have seen with our own eyes (and the images that still remain on our retinas) ...
What we have contemplated (studied carefully) and touched with our hands ...

The Word (Gk. Logos), which gives life!
[Jesus is referred to as the Word, God's messenger sent to communicate with humanity. There are three Greek words that are all translated as "life" in English: bios, psuche, and zoe. The word biology comes from bios and has to do with our physical life, see 1 John 2:16 where it refers to the good of "this life." The word psychology comes from psuche and often refers to our inner spiritual life, see Matt. 16:25. The third word, zoe, used here describes God's eternal life. Life is in the definite form – Jesus is the Word of eternal life, see John 6:68. He both is and gives God's abundant life. Now follows an explanation of life:]
