And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David, and Rehoboam (Hebr. Rechavam), his son, reigned in his place.
[This passage describes the first seven kings of the Northern Kingdom. Jeroboam is the first king of the Northern Kingdom. He reigned for 22 years () 931-910 BC]. And Rehoboam (Hebr. Rechavam) went to Shechem [present-day Nablus in Samaria, see ], for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king.
they sent and called him, so that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
And Rehoboam took counsel from the elders who had stood before Solomon his father while he was still alive, and said, "What counsel do you give me to answer this people?"
And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had told them, saying, "Come to me on the third day."
But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam [still] reigned over them.
When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was in charge of forced labor, all Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to get into his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.
And when Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen men who were warriors, gathered together to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom back to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon.
"Speak to Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,
If the people go up and offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord (Yahweh) in Jerusalem, then the hearts of the people will return to their lord, to Rehoboam, king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam, king of Judah."
[Rehoboam was the first ruler of the Southern Kingdom (reigned 930-913 BC).]
And Rehoboam, Solomon's son, reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was 41 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord (Yahweh) had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there, and his mother [queen mother] was Naamah the Ammonite.
But in the fifth year of Rehoboam, Shishak, king of Egypt, went up against Jerusalem. [Shishak was from the 22nd dynasty of Egypt. He hid Jeroboam after Solomon tried to kill him, see .]
And King Rehoboam made (manufactured) bronze shields in their place and entrusted them to the hands of the captain of the guard who guarded the door of the king's house.

And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.
And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. And his mother's [the queen mother's] name was Naamah, the Ammonite. And Abijam, his son, reigned in his place.
And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.

And Solomon rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David his father. His son Rehoboam succeeded him as king.
[The rest of the book lists 20 rulers of the Southern Kingdom, 19 kings and one queen. Solomon's son Rehoboam reigned for 17 years (976-959 BC).] Rehoboam went to Shechem, because all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
And they sent messengers to call him back. Then Jeroboam came with all Israel and spoke to Rehoboam, saying
Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime, and he said, "What advice do you give me to give this people?"
On the third day, Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam, as the king had said, "Come back to me in three days."
Then the king gave them a harsh answer, for King Rehoboam did not heed the advice of the elders.
And Rehoboam remained king only over the Israelites who lived in the cities of Judah.
When King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was in charge of forced labor, the children of Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam himself had to hurry up into his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.
When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he gathered the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against Israel and win back the kingdom for Rehoboam.
"Tell Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah, and all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin:
Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he rebuilt cities in Judah as fortified places.
For three years they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made the reign of Solomon's son Rehoboam strong, for three years they walked in the ways of David and Solomon.
Rehoboam took Mahalath as his wife. She was the daughter of Jerimoth, the son of David, and of Abihail, the daughter of Eliab, the son of Jesse.
And Rehoboam loved Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines. He had taken 18 wives and 60 concubines, and he became the father of 28 sons and 60 daughters.
Rehoboam appointed Abijah, Maacah's son, as leader among his brothers, because he intended to make him king.
When Rehoboam's kingdom was established and he became powerful, he abandoned the teaching of the Lord. So did all Israel [the northern kingdom].
But in the fifth year of King Rehoboam's reign, Shishak, king of Egypt, went up against Jerusalem, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord (Yahweh).
The prophet Shemaiah had come to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah, who had gathered in Jerusalem out of fear of Shishak. And he said to them, "Thus says the Lord: You have forsaken me, and therefore I have forsaken you and given you into the hand of Shishak."
In their place, King Rehoboam had shields made of copper, and he gave them to the commanders of the guard who guarded the entrance to the royal palace.
So King Rehoboam strengthened his power in Jerusalem and continued to reign. He was 41 years old when he became king, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah, an Ammonite.
The rest of the acts of Rehoboam, from first to last, are recorded in the chronicles of the prophet Shemaiah and the seer Iddo, according to the genealogical records. Rehoboam and Jeroboam were at war with each other throughout their lives.
And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David. His son Abijah became king after him.
A crowd of loose people joined him, evil men who became too strong for Rehoboam, Solomon's son. Rehoboam was young and anxious and therefore could not resist them.
