It is also counted as the land of the Rephaim, who lived there before, but the Ammonites called them Zamzumim,
An Ammonite or Moabite may not enter the assembly of God (Yahweh). Until the tenth generation, none of them may enter the assembly of the Lord (Yahweh) forever,
Then the Ammonite Nahash came up and encamped against Javesh-Gilead [probably Tell Maqlub along the Javis River]. Then all the men of Javesh said to Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you." [The Ammonites had been fighting the Israelites over the area east of the Jordan River for a long time, see Judges 11:33.]
And the Ammonite Nahash said to them, "On this condition I will make a covenant with you, that everyone's right eye be put out, and I will put it as a reproach on all Israel." [Mutilating enemies was common among pagan peoples, see Judges 16:21; 2 Kings 25:7. The people would be able to see enough to function as laborers, but would be unable to become skilled warriors and revolt.]
Tseleq, the Ammonite,
Nacharaj, the Berothite, armour-bearer to Joab, the son of Zeruiah,
[This passage frames the chiasmus in chapters 3-11. It was precisely the marriages to foreign women that he was not to do (Deut. 7:3–4; 17:16–17), and this proved to be his downfall. In recent years, archaeologists have begun to analyze fingerprints on clay shards. In excavations where there are Canaanite temples (including Tell Burna 2022), it has been seen that idols, figurines, masks, and vessels for religious use were made by female potters, while ordinary vessels were made by men. Here, archaeology confirms that foreign women were involved in creating these occult objects.]
And King Solomon loved many foreign women, in addition to (besides) the daughter of Pharaoh [who is excluded, see 1 Kings 3:1] – Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites –
And Solomon went after Ashtoreth [Ishtar – goddess of love and war; queen of heaven, wife of Baal], goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom [also called Molech, see verse 7], the abomination of the Ammonites.
[Rehoboam was the first ruler of the Southern Kingdom (reigned 930-913 BC).]
And Rehoboam, Solomon's son, reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was 41 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord (Yahweh) had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there, and his mother [queen mother] was Naamah the Ammonite.
And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. And his mother's [the queen mother's] name was Naamah, the Ammonite. And Abijam, his son, reigned in his place.
Selek the Ammonite,
Nahrah the Barothite, armor-bearer to Joab, the son of Zeruiah,
So King Rehoboam strengthened his power in Jerusalem and continued to reign. He was 41 years old when he became king, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah, an Ammonite.
Then the Moabites and Ammonites came, and with them other Ammonites, to fight against Jehoshaphat.
Those who conspired against him were Zabad, son of Shimeath the Ammonite, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith the Moabite.
The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as Egypt, for he became very powerful.
When these things had been accomplished, the leaders came to me and said, "The people of Israel and the priests and Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, but are doing according to their abominations (following their ungodly customs and practices) just like the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.
When the officials Sanvallat, the Horonite [probably from Beit-Choron, 30 km north of Jerusalem, governor of Samaria], and Tobiah (Hebr. Tovijaho), the Ammonite [probably governor of Ammon, see Ezra 2:60], heard this, they became very angry that a man had come seeking the welfare of the children of Israel.
But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite (Hebr. Tovijaho), the officials, and Geshem the Arab heard this, they laughed and despised us and said, "What are you doing? Are you going to rebel against the king?"
Now Tobiah the Ammonite (Hebr. Tovijaho) was with him, and he said, "What they are building, a fox will break down if it jumps on their stone wall."
But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the damage was beginning to be repaired, they became very angry.
On that day, they read from the Book of Moses to the people. There it was written [Deut. 23:3–6] that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be allowed to enter the assembly of God.
At that time I also saw Jewish men who had taken Ashdodite, Ammonite, and Moabite women.
