When Abram heard that his brother [his relative Lot] had been captured, he sent his most experienced men, 318 men born in his house, and they pursued the enemies as far as Dan [in the north].
And Rachel said, "God (Elohim) has judged (Hebr. danan) me and also heard my voice and has given me a son." Therefore, she named (called) him Dan [meaning: judge].
Rachel's [two] sons by her maid Bilhah:
Dan. and Naphtali.
Dan's sons [one son]:
Chushim. []
Dan [meaning "judge"] shall judge (bring justice to) his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
Dan shall be a serpent by the way,
a horned serpent in the well-trodden (well-known and much-used) path,
biting the horse's heel
so that the rider falls backward.

And I, behold, I have given him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And in the heart of all who are wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded you [in chapters 25-30]:
And he has put in his heart that he should teach, both him and Oholiav, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.
And with him was Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, a craftsman and a skilled artisan and a weaver with colors, in blue and purple and scarlet and fine linen.
[It was the Levites who were responsible for setting up, taking down, and transporting the tabernacle during the desert journey, see . By mentioning Bezalel again (; ; ; ) and Oholiab (; ; ) and that they were from the tribes of Judah and Dan, it serves as a reminder that the tabernacle was a project that involved the entire people. In the following verses, it also becomes clear that craftsmen from different tribes had worked together.]
And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the name of the Lord (Yahweh) and cursed. And they brought him to Moses. And his mother's name was Shelomit, daughter of Divri, of the tribe of Dan.
From Dan: Achiezer, son of Ammishaddai.
The sons of Dan, their generations, according to their families, after the houses of their fathers, by the number of names, every male separately, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war,
this was the number of those of the tribe of Dan, they were 62,700.
On the north side
shall be those in the camp belonging to Dan's banner according to their divisions.
The leader of the sons of Dan is Achiezer, son of Ammishaddai,
All who were counted in Dan's camp were 157,600 according to their divisions. They shall go out last (marching after the other tribes) under their banners.
On the 10th day, Achiezer, son of Ammishaddai, leader of the sons of Dan, offered his sacrifice.
And under their banner (standard) the camp of the sons of Dan marched in their order of battle, they were the rear guard of all the camps, and over his army was Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai. [The rear guard consists of the three tribes that march under the banner of Dan.]

These are the sons of Dan by their families:
Of Shocham, the family of the Shochamites.
These are the families of Dan by their families.
And from the tribe of the sons of Dan, a leader,
Boqi, son of Joglis.
And these [six tribes] shall stand on Mount Ebal [present-day Imad-el-Deen, to the north] for the curse:
Reuben (Hebr. Reoven) [the eldest; Leah's firstborn];
Gad and Asher [whose mother was Zilpah – Leah's maidservant] and
Zebulun (Hebr. Zevolun);
Dan. and Naphtali [whose mother was Bilhah – Rachel's maidservant].
And to Dan he said: "Dan is a young lion leaping forth from Bashan."
[Dan's territory was originally in the south, but later they moved and settled in the northernmost part of Bashan, now northern Golan, near Mount Hermon. How they changed territory is described in , which probably took place at the end of the period of the judges when Samson was a judge.]
Moses went
[north] from the desert of Moab up to Mount
Nebo, which is
[on the east side of the Jordan River] opposite Jericho. He went up to the top of
Pisgah.
[A mountain ridge with several peaks located just northwest of Mount Nebo.] There the Lord
(Yahweh) showed him the whole land
[that he had been promised to see ]:
[Moses stands in the middle of the eastern edge of the land that will become Israel, and starting from north to south (in a semicircle in a counterclockwise direction), God shows him the whole land.] Gilead

[the city of] Dan.
[in the north]And the seventh lot fell to the tribe of the sons of Dan according to their families.
But the border of the sons of Dan was too narrow for them, so the sons of Dan went up and fought against Leshem and took it and struck it with the edge of the sword and occupied it and lived there and called Leshem Dan after the name of their forefather Dan.
This is the inheritance of the sons of Dan according to their families, the cities with their villages.
And the rest of the sons of Kohath received by lot for their families from the tribe of Ephraim and from the tribe of Dan and from the half-tribe of Manasseh—10 cities.
And from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with the open land around it, Gibbethon with the open land around it,
And the Amorites forced the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they would not let them come down into the valley [; ].
Gilead had its home on the other side of the Jordan,
and Dan, why does he stay with the ships?
Asher lives by the sea
and has his home by its bay.
[Asher has its territory around the Gulf of Haifa and northward along the coast toward Lebanon.]
And there was a man from Zorah [25 km west of Jerusalem, just north of Beit-Shemesh], from the family of the Danites, and his name was Manoah [meaning: resting place; from the word noach meaning rest]. And his wife was barren and had not borne any children. [The phrase is very similar to , and the reader immediately makes the connection to the story of Abram and Sarai, who were also unable to have children. It is interesting that the man is first identified geographically, then by tribe, and finally by name.]

In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the Danites [still] sought an inheritance [their own territory] to dwell in, for nothing had been given them to this day as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
[Moses had previously blessed Dan and assigned their tribe the area of Bashan, located in the Golan north of the tribe of Naphtali, see . Under Joshua's leadership, the tribe of Dan had been given the area west of Jerusalem towards the Mediterranean Sea between Ephraim and Benjamin, see . However, the Danites do not seem satisfied with their allocation (the area is too "cramped," see ) and want the northern area Moses mentions in his blessing, rather than the lot they received from Josh. This chapter describes how the Danites conquered the northern city of Laish, which was then named Dan.]And the sons of Dan sent from their families five men from among them, men who were soldiers, from Zorah [Samson's birthplace and the place where he was also buried, see ; ] and from Eshtaol [it was in the area between these cities in the Lowlands that the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon Samson, see ] to search (scout, spy on) the land and to explore it, and they said to them, "Go and explore the land."
And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Mic., and lodged there.
And from there they set out from the families of the Danites, from Tsorah and from Eshtaol, 600 men girded with weapons of war.
And the 600 men girded with their weapons of war stood at the entrance of the gate, those who were from the sons of Dan.
They were far from Mic.'s house, and the men who were in the houses that were near Mic.'s house cried out and caught up with the sons of Dan.
And they called out to the sons of Dan, and they turned (their faces) toward them and said to Micah "What [is missing] to you, that you are crying out?"
But the sons of Dan answered him, "Do not raise your voice among us, or bitter men will come upon your soul (your life), and you will gather your soul and the souls of your house (you and your household will lose your lives)."
Then the children of Dan continued on their way. And when Micah saw that they were stronger than he, he returned to his house.
And they named the city Dan, [after] the name of their father Dan, who was born to Israel. But nevertheless (a sharp emphasis and contrast between something that was and something that is – Hebr. olam), Lajish was the name of the city at first.
And the sons of Dan set up a pillar for themselves, and Jonathan, the son of Gershon, the son of Moses [some manuscripts have "the son of Manasseh"], he and his brothers were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day they went into captivity from the land. [This is the first occurrence of a person named Jonathan, a name that later becomes a common name. It means "Yahweh has given."]
And all the sons of Israel went out, and the congregation gathered as one man from Dan and Beer-Sheva and the land of Gilead to the Lord (Yahweh) at Mizpah.
And all Israel, from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], knew that Samuel was becoming a prophet of the Lord (Yahweh).
to remove the kingdom from the house of Saul and set up David's throne over Israel and over Judah from Dan to Beersheba."
But I advise that all Israel gather to you from Dan to Beersheba, as numerous as the sand by the sea (impossible to count), and that you yourself (personally) go out to battle.
And the king said to Joab, the commander of the army [commander in the singular], who was with him, "Go now and walk through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan [in the north] to Beersheba [in the south], and count the people, so that I may know the number of the people."
And they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim-Haddash, and they came to
Dan-Jaan and around to
Sidon,
And the Lord (Yahweh) sent a plague on Israel from the morning until the appointed time, and the people died from Dan to Beersheba, 70,000 men.
And Judah and Israel lived in safety, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
And he set one in
Bethel and the other he set in
Dan.
And this became a sin, for the people went and worshiped before it as far as Dan.
And Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel and struck Ijon and Dan and Abel-Beth-Maacah and all Kinnereth [Galilee] with all the land of Naphtali.
But he did not turn away from the sins that
[the first king of the Northern Kingdom] Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had caused Israel to sin, not from the golden calves that were in
Bethel and were in
Dan.

Then David said to Joab and the commanders of the people, "Go and count Israel from
Beer-Sheva [in the south] to

He is the son of one of Dan's daughters, and his father is a man of Tyre. He is skilled in working with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, as well as with purple, dark blue, and crimson yarn and fine linen, and he can perform all kinds of carving and weave all kinds of artistic fabrics. You can have him work with your men and the men of my lord, your father David, who are skilled in the arts.
Ben-Hadad listened to King Asa and sent his commanders against the cities of Israel and captured Ijon, Dan, and Abel-Majim, as well as all the storehouses in the cities of Naphtali.
And they decided to proclaim throughout Israel, from
Beer-Sheva to
Dan, that they should come and celebrate the Passover of the Lord, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For most of them had not celebrated it as prescribed.
A voice (listen) tells from Dan
and disaster is heard from the mountains of Ephraim.
The snorting of his horses
is heard from Dan,
at the sound of the neighing of his mighty ones,
the whole land trembles,
and they come and devour the land
and all that is in it,
the city and those who dwell in it.
These are the names of the tribes:
On the northern border, along the road to Hamath, which goes to Hamath, and on to Hazer-Enan, with Damascus on the north and along Hamath, Dan shall have a lot, so that the entire stretch from the east side to the west belongs to him.
Next to Dan's territory, Asher shall have a lot from the east side to the west.
On the east side it shall also measure 4,500 cubits [2.3 km], and have three gates: the first is the gate of Joseph, the second the gate of Benjamin, and the third the gate of Dan.
Those who swear by the sins of Samaria and say, "As your god,
Dan, lives"
and "As the ways
(manner of acting) of
Beer-Sheva live,"
they shall fall and never rise again.
